Andrew Holle’s research journey spans continents and disciplines, unified by a deep interest in how cells sense and respond to their physical environment. He earned his B.S.E. from Arizona State University, conducting early research in the labs of Dr. Christine Pauken and Dr. Deirdre Meldrum. He then completed his Ph.D. in Bioengineering at the University of California, San Diego in Dr. Adam Engler’s Stem Cell Biology and Bioengineering group, where he identified the mechanosensitive role of the focal adhesion protein vinculin in substrate stiffness-induced stem cell differentiation.

Motivated by the parallels between stem cell and cancer mechanobiology, Andrew joined Prof. Joachim Spatz’s Cellular Biophysics group at the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research in Stuttgart, Germany. There, he applied photolithography and microfluidic techniques to develop microchannel assays for studying cancer cell invasion and confined migration.

Now at the Mechanobiology Institute and NUS Biomedical Engineering, Andrew’s work focuses on the role of physical confinement in cellular mechanobiology, with an emphasis on novel bioengineering strategies to control stem cell differentiation. His interdisciplinary approach brings together biophysics, microtechnology, and tissue engineering to explore how mechanical cues shape cell fate and function.
